Delivering power and nuance in equal measure, Welland, Ontario’s Breaking Still offers a fresh hard rock sound, with a turn-of-the-century alternative sensibility.
After having spent a small handful of years playing local shows and events, including the Niagara Music Awards in 2019, the quintet fronted by founder and vocalist Justin Deschamps, have solidified their lineup and a strong local following.
Unified by a love of eclectic influences spanning generations, and a firm belief in music as a vessel for positive change, the group’s lineup is filled out by bassist, Nic Nello, guitarists, Rob Lock & Cat Jones, and drummer, Mark Spags.
A tight live band with as much an emphasis on ear-catching melodies as there is energy and drive, the five-piece offers a strong variety of original tunes in their set, a handful of which have been recorded for their debut studio effort, including the musically and emotionally churning lead single “No Place”.
Breaking Still’s music has been described as pervasive, as the subjects of mental health and addiction, handled with surprisingly potent and engaging delicacy through Deschamps’ lyrics, can be felt to one's core.
The frontman notes the importance to both himself personally, as well as at large, to continue shedding light on these often hidden topics, and again, inspire positivity, through the expression of perseverance.
The band strives to exemplify their message outside of music, having participated in multiple charitable efforts throughout their community.
Altogether, Breaking Still is a modern hard rock powerhouse with an engaging live show, honest and clever lyricism, and a wonderfully healthy helping of hooks, riffs, melodies, and moshable moments woven throughout their repertoire.
